Shelby Mathews was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome, a rare and deadly form of epilepsy when she was four months old. Along with seizures, the disease has lead her to developmental issues. She has a hard time talking in complete sentences, and often uses hand gestures to display her emotions.

A member of the Los Angeles Fire Department District 33 leaves a smoked filled home for battered women on 74th Street between Western Avenue and Saint Andrews Street. According to resident Sri Johnston, her roommate Candyce Bufford asked her for a cigarette and body wash, which Johnston did not have for her. Bufford became enraged and started yelling which led to her being asked to leave the residence. Bufford then proceeded to fill a glass bottle with gasoline and through it inside the home.
